See all Hallelujahs By Tiffany Jackson
The word chaos perfectly describes last night’s caucus. Volunteers were rushed into position without the proper training and angry citizens were left with many questions but one thing that brought a smile to my face is the fact that people showed up. I was completely shocked by the number of citizens that attended because as I prepared to leave my home on my way to vote, I saw many houses festooned with motionless cars in the drive-ways and on the streets.
I was confused because I did not know if people stayed home because they did not understand the Texas-Two Step or if they just did not care. Of course I hope it was because they did not understand that they should have voted twice because I would hate to think that people are not ready for a change.
This is history in the making. Both women and African Americans have come a long way. A few years ago no one would have ever predicted that a woman or a black man would run for the presidency at the same time. This historical moment is an astounding phenomenon but it has created a large division among people.
The caucus was a prime example. The Clinton supporters appeared to be very cautious perhaps; border line anal when it came down to the calculations of the vote and the Obama supporters appeared to be very defensive. The Clinton voters stuck together and sat on one side of the room while the Obama supporters sat on the other side. Although, I was not born during the segregation era, the caucus reminded me of a scene read in a book or viewed on television. Anger and frustration spread over the Florence Middle School auditorium in Dallas like a rumor from a popular high school gossiper. The tension was evident yet the volunteers remained calm and answered questions at the best of their ability.
I declare no more division. If we are about bringing change to America it is going to take the entire worldwide community to work together. We cannot let the visual picture of the caucus become a reality in our daily lives. We must join hand and hand for a better tomorrow.
