Trouble prone rapper/actor DMX is planning to release a Gospel album in 2008. The MC has two albums on tap for this year, one of which will be a straight ‘give God the glory’ project.
Many of DMX’s conversations with God have been a matter of public record since his career bloomed to superstar status in 1998. His catalog features nearly as many inspirational ghetto hymns – such as “Lord Give Me a Sign,” “A Minute for Your Son” and “The Prayer.”
DMX, whose real name is Earl Simmons, told MTV News that the Gospel-rap project should be out later this year.
The project will be called, “Walk Me Now and You’ll Fly Me Later.” During his hiatus from the Hip-Hop world, X said he contemplated leaving music altogether to become a minister, but decided to return to the mic. His life is a testimony which proves that he will deliver real messages.
Born on December 18, 1970, DMX moved with part of his family to the New York City suburb of Yonkers while still a young child. A troubled and abusive childhood turned him violent, and he spent a great deal of time living in group homes and surviving on the streets via robbery, which led to several run-ins with the law.
He found his saving grace in hip-hop, starting out as a DJ and human beatbox, and later moved into rapping for a greater share of the spotlight, taking his name from the DMX digital drum machine (though it's also been reinterpreted to mean "Dark Man X"). He made a name for himself on the freestyle battle scene, and was written up in The Source magazine's Unsigned Hype column in 1991.
Since then he has remained a favorite of many in the hip-hop world despite his many run-ins with the law. But what many say, some of the best preachers are those who have a story to tell. Let’s see if DMX popularity can crossover to the gospel circuit.
