REAL MEN DO PRAISE

I believe that the ‘Real Men’ who walk in the world and not in the Word are under tremendous pressure and that men who praise God and walk in the Word are covered under the Blood of Jesus.

The pressure of trying to be a so-called ‘Real Man’ can fuel the fires that burn the pain of deceit, anger, violence and self-destruction.  It can also spread the flames of addiction, homicide and suicide.

Since the turn of the 19th century, the beginning of the Industrial Age, boys and men have been told by girls and women, how they should behave.  They have been told that real men take care of their women and children, care for their cars, fix things that are broken, make more than enough money, talk about concubines and conquests, do not allow their women to talk back, do not show certain emotions, do not go to church regularly — and do not openly praise.

Although some aspects of those worldly definitions of a real man are truths, they are characterizations of a man from man’s perspective — outside of the Kingdom of God. But, for millions of men, particularly African American men, this no-nonsense real man epitomizes masculinity.

However, I have also observed men younger than me, those between 18 – 35, meeting and worshiping in God’s House more often. They are discovering the power of praise.  They are discovering the release and relief found in giving God praise.

These brothers became of age in a much different time than those of us who are older and set in our ways. Many have lived the street life — the life of the hustler, the dealer, the gang banger, the criminal, the teenage father, the addictive personality of the victim. Having done it all and still lived to tell their story, they are not ashamed of their praise.

I know this to be true. I often talk with men in environments filled with worship.  As the CEO of DallasGospelConnection.com it is paramount that I watch, talk and listen to the men around me. And lately, I have observed that more and more men are demonstrating that it’s okay for men to energetically and earnestly praise.

Therefore, to all men, I say to you confession and sincere praise will lead to your redemption. Isaiah 59:1 tells us, “Surely the arms of the Lord are not too short to save, nor his ears to dull to hear.” Psalm 150:6 says, “Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.” That includes every man.So to all real men, let’s continue to get our praise on!
