Ricky and Brenda of Scents Cheaper might just be the most dynamic couple yet, working together under the guidance of God. The unique store located in the heart of old downtown Mesquite looks small from outdoors, but once you enter you will embark on an unforgettable experience. This is just what the beautiful couple aim towards when it comes to pleasing their customers.
“Everyday is about making people feel special, making them feel the spirit of God in our service and how we treat them,” said Brenda. “Before deciding to move into this facility seven months ago, Ricky and I talked about wanting to leave a legacy for our kids, we wanted to be able to make a difference and pamper people. We wanted them to enjoy a relaxed setting all the time and not just at parties, but most of all we wanted them to be able to come in here and enjoy the atmosphere and take home the experience. Even the fragrances we sell are aromatherapy.”
Scents Cheaper is filled with aromatherapy, from the massage oils, to the oil based fragrances, body butter, natural soap, home fragrances and much more; the journey of smell goods is definitely an exciting one.
“We are truly grateful, we did not think that we would be carrying half of the stuff we have in the store but God really gave us ideas and he said you can do this and this is fragrance and it is all tied in and that really stretched us,” said Brenda. “Now we are able to reach more people and it just blows me away.”
The happy couple is like salt and pepper, although they bring a different flavor, they are both needed to complete a perfect dish.
“God blessed us with different talents,” confessed Ricky. “I used my creativity and started creating different fragrances to build our line that is exclusive to Scents Cheaper and I developed a couple of botanicals, Earth Essence and Uniquely You; that’s my thing. Brenda’s thing is those beautiful baskets and a lot of the graphics we work together on.”
Ricky continued. “It was a marriage made in heaven, both business wise and on the personal side.”
Ricky says he started mixing fragrances at the tender age of 11-years-old and he used to mix grease and oils to put on his own hair. Brenda calls him the “Mad Chemist.” Ricky’s knowledge of fragrance adds to the growth of the company.
“The real growth comes from the fact that we stand behind our products so if it wasn’t up to our standards it wouldn’t be here,” said Ricky. “We pull products that we cannot enjoy.”
In addition to the large variety of fragrances, the prices are unbelievable.
“Back when I first started, I used just a plain white label that I created on a computer with the name Scents Cheaper so it has always been the name of the company,” said Ricky. “ I wanted to let people know that it smells good but it wasn’t going to cost an arm and a leg. Some people love that bottle that the fragrances come in and they go and pay $75 or $80 dollars for that bottle but with us they might spend $15 dollars for an ounce of oil that is going to last you longer than the department store bottled fragrance. But for those who want a decorated bottle, we offer that as well.”
The couple expressed that the oil-based fragrances that they carry are better for the ozone and they are made from the raw ingredients instead of water or alcohol based fragrances.
“We do our own bottling,” said Ricky. “It is very rewarding that we have the ability to create on such a large scale and to be able to hear feedback from some of our customers.”
From what began as a company depending on conferences, salons and parties for sells, Scents Cheaper is on its way.
“In the next five years we plan to sell the re-diffusers from the company La’Dee Dah and to develop other franchises with different color schemes and layouts,” said Brenda. “God blessed us to get in here and he just empowered us to go way further than we could have imagined. God opened the doors and gave us favor that it would be this place and that it would be bigger than anything else we were trying to get. Once we got the space God was just planting ideas everywhere in our minds to what would be great for the customer.”
