THE DOWNWARD SPIRAL OF SIN
When they refused to acknowledge God, he abandoned them to their evil minds and let them do things that should never be done. Their lives became full of every kind of wickedness, sin, greed, hate, envy murder, fighting, deception, malicious behaviour and gossip.
Romans 1:28 - 29, NLT
Yesterday on the news I heard about two slayings. One was regarding a family of five brutally murdered by a stranger and the other was regarding a mother and daughter murdered by the husband and father. My heart sank when I heard about these murders, for once again, another life had been needlessly taken.
And I wondered: What is going on in our world today? Why is there such much killing, hatred, and murder? Why don't people value human life anymore?
Romans 1:21 tells us the reason people don't value life anymore is because they have fallen into the downward spiral of sin. The downward spiral of sin occurs when people refuse to acknowledge God as God, make up their own ideas of what a god should be and then choose to live their lives apart from God. As people move further and further away from God's laws, their lives become filled with every kind of wickedness, which includes killing and murder.
Can a person caught up in the downward spiral of sin ever be delivered? Yes, for the Bible also states that God will declare us righteous if we believe in the one who raised Jesus from the dead (Romans 4:24). If we'll reach up to the God above, confess our sins and ask him to save us, we'll find deliverance from the downward spiral of sin.
