Jubilee Theatre makes a triumphant return to the stage with Nate Jacobs’ “How I Got Over” from June 19th - July 19th, 2020
Fort Worth, TX; (June 9th, 2020) After a 3 month hiatus, Jubilee Theatre will premiere its Spring Musical production for the 2019-2020 season, “Shades of Us!”, on June 19th, 2020 at 8:00 PM at the Jubilee Theatre in Sundance Square. Jubilee Theatre was founded on June 19th, 1981. The organization is proud to celebrate its 39th birthday with this very special production. How I Got Over honors the legendary Queen of Gospel, Mahalia Jackson (pictured left), and other gospel greats. The show will include soulful renditions of such classics as “Precious Lord Take My Hand,” “Twelve Gates to the City,” and “Tell It, Sing It, Shout It.”
Mahalia Jackson was highly respected for her musical ability, as well as her activism during the civil rights era. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said of Mahalia Jackson, “A voice like this comes not once in a century, but once in a millennium.” Jackson was very close to Dr. King., performing at his famous “I Have A Dream” speech, as well as his funeral service.
This production will be directed by local talent Khira Hailey, returning to Jubilee for the first time since directing Stick Fly in 2018. Khira states “In this show we are taking the gospel of the 60s, the songs of Mahalia Jackson, Clara Ward, James Cleveland and more; here they will be the soundtrack for a story about finding your voice and continuing to fight for what you need and want, no matter the fear.” In her direction of the show, Khira intends to connect the music of Gospel to the ongoing struggle for civil rights.
