Discovering Your Gift
Lately I have been talking to different people and they have asked me, “ how do I find out what my gift is?” I actually was perplexed that some people didn’t know what their gift was because from a little girl, I was enthralled with books and writing. I would study the dictionary to learn new words and would read anything. I was writing books when I was nine years old and I would have dreams of writing books and I would look at life as a series of characters.
In order to get clarity on how to discover what your gift is, I think that we have to agree that everyone has a gift. Proverbs 18:16 states, “ A man’s gift makes room for him, and brings him before great men.” Romans 11:29 states, “For the gifts and calling of the Lord are without repentance.” So if you are thinking that somehow God passed you by and didn’t give you a gift, be encouraged, you have a gift.
When people think of what their gift might be, I think that many believe that only certain talents qualify as gifts such as being able to write, sing, dance, paint, draw, cook, or bake. Many people don’t consider that being able to organize is a gift, teach young children, have administration skills, be a mechanic, cut hair or even cutting grass can all be gifts from the Lord.
Another misconception is that you have to go to a university to locate your gift. 2 Corinthians 4v7 says, “ Now we have this treasure in Earthen vessels, that the surpassingly great power is from God and not from us.” God has placed your gift within you, and it is your assignment to excavate it and use it in this life time.
So now that we have come to the agreement that yes, everyone has a gift, some may have more than one gift, but nonetheless, everyone has one. God is a purposeful God and nothing He creates is without purpose. We have also established that a gift can be a multitude of things.
Below are two questions for you to answer that can put you on the path to finding out what your gift is.
1. What do you love doing and if given the chance would you do it for free? There are a lot of people in college getting degrees in careers just because they think it will bring them money. You can have money and be the C.E.O of a Fortune 500 company, however if being a CEO is not your gift, you will be unhappy.
2.What comes easily for you to do with the least amount of effort or toil? This will be different for everyone. As much as I love to sing, that is not my gift. But if you give me five words and thirty minutes, I will craft something in writing that for others may take days to write.
If you are sincerely wondering what your gift is, take a moment and sit quietly and think about these two questions.
I would admonish you If you haven’t figured out your gift or are not operating in it, I would urge you to do so with all urgency. You are not waiting on God, He is waiting on you. After thinking about these two questions, seek out the Creator who gave you the gift. James 1v5 says,“ If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God , who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.
There’s a saying that states, “One day or day one. You decide.”I hope that you decide to go after your gift so that you may live a full and complete life.
